Creating Special Effects

  Tute: Creating Special Effects

Let’s begin:
STEP ONE:
Create a New Illustrator Document, File > New. Name it: “Torn Metal”, and give it a size of 500px by 500px.
Open the LAYERS palette (Window > Layers (F7)) and rename “Layer 1” as, “torn”.
We migrated our web sites to Server Intellect over one weekend and the setup was so smooth that we were up and running right away. They assisted us with everything we needed to do for all of our applications. With Server Intellect’s help, we were able to avoid any headaches!
STEP TWO:
Select the Pen Tool (P) and draw black shapes similar to the ones below:
Step Two
STEP THREE:
Now with the Pencil Tool (N) draw shapes that look like edges of a torn paper.
Step Three
STEP FOUR:
Open the GRADIENT palette (Window > Gradient) and apply a black to white Linear Gradient to each of our “torn paper” shapes.
Step Four
Note: The Gradient Angle may vary on each shape.
STEP FIVE:
Select one of the “torn paper” shapes, go to Effect > Stylize > Inner Glow, and enter the following settings:
Step Five A
Note: The Blur size may vary according to your shape.
Apply this effect to the other “torn paper” shapes:
Step Five B
STEP SIX:
Select all of our “torn paper” shapes, go to Effect > Stylize > Drop Shadow, and enter the following settings:
Step Six
STEP SEVEN:
Now that we have our torn metal edges looking good, place a New Layer under the “torn” layer and name it “background”. With the Rectangle Tool (M) create a 500px by 500px rectangle and fill it with a gray linear gradient to give it a metal aspect.
Step Seven
Congratulations, now you have a realistic Vector torn metal! Play with more shapes and colors to create different torn effects. Be creative and have fun!
Final Result
We moved our web sites to Server Intellect and have found them to be incredibly professional. Their setup is very easy and we were up and running in no time.
